Flora Gomes

Flora Gomes, artistic name of Florentino Gomes, is a filmmaker from Guinea-Bissau, a pioneer of local cinema and one of the most representative African filmmakers. He is known for his original way of drawing African portraits using myth and current history, in a fusion of elements with a delicate poetic charge and a strong universal sense.

His first feature-length fiction film is from 1987: Mortu Nega, a film that invokes the struggle for independence.

He has participated and won awards at festivals such as Venice and Cannes, among others. Given her nationality and the fact that several of her films are co-productions with Portugal, Flora Gomes still occupies a special place in the history of Portuguese cinema.
